Your gift provides matching funds to secure another $20,000 from the Veterans Administration. The complex nature of this 10,625 sq. ft. facility that provides all the meals, training, community relationships and administration makes it essential to the life-safety in serving 250 veterans each day. Your gift will be used for this project so that we can continue helping these men be successful in moving toward a brighter future. What is the Veterans’ Restoration Quarters? The VRQ represents the third largest transitional facility for homeless male veterans in the nation and is under the umbrella of the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (abccm.org). This 10 acre campus is only one mile from the V.A. Medical Center – Asheville. The kitchen and dining facilities are large enough to handle 1,000 meals a day and seat 250 men at a time. The VRQ also houses the first nationally chartered American Legion Post which is run by formerly homeless veterans for our homeless veterans and is 137 members strong, A.L. Post 526. Thanks to... When a veteran kitchen helper saw drips running into a light fixture, he cut the power just in time to avert a crisis. We have made lots of patches during this record breaking rainy season. ABCCM Veterans’ Restoration Quarters (VRQ) has already put on new roofs over three residential wings and now we need your help! We need a roof over our training rooms, kitchen and dining facilities for 250 veterans a day. The roof requires a total replacement according to experts in the city’s Building Inspection Department and the Facilities Manager of the V.A. Medical Center – Asheville. ABCCM had experts conduct boring samples on the flat roof. All of these samples showed significant decay. The roof is essentially water logged. Bids came in at $90,000-$95,000. The City Building Inspector’s advice to our Property Committee was to strip off the old roofing material; replace it with a new molded insulation and TPO material that would restore the integrity of the roof as originally engineered. This is needed because of the significant decay, over an area that is approximately 10,625 sq. ft. ABCCM was selected for a matching grant of about $20,000 by the Veterans Administration. Johnson Roofing Concepts made an in-kind gift which will bring the original cost of $90,000 to $45,000. Now we need your help to raise the remaining $25,000!
